How deep do you grind a stump?
Four to eight inches below grade covers most residential stumps, which is enough to lay sod or seed over the spot. Where a stump sits next to concrete or a shallow sprinkler line, we may go shallower on that side and explain why before we start.
Do you clean up the grindings?
Yes. The chips and soil are either raked back into the hole and tamped level, or loaded up and hauled away when you plan to plant there. Either way the lawn is left walkable rather than covered in a mound of debris.
What affects the cost of grinding a stump?
Diameter at the root flare, how many stumps there are, the depth you need, access to the stump, and whether grindings stay or go. Rock and buried debris in the soil also slow the work. We give you the price after we understand those details — no guesses over text.
Can I plant grass where the stump was?
Usually yes, once the hole is backfilled with topsoil rather than only wood chips. Chips break down slowly and rob nitrogen, so for a new lawn or a new tree we recommend hauling the grindings off and filling with soil.
