The work
What the work actually is
Surface root grinding shaves the top of an exposed root rather than cutting through it. The root stays connected to the tree, the high points come off, and soil and seed can go over the top so grass closes the gap.
It is a judgement call every time. Removing too much wood, or working too close to the trunk, weakens the tree and can destabilise it. We would rather grind fewer roots well than take a risk with a mature tree you want to keep.

Surface root questions
Why do tree roots come up above the ground?
Roots follow air and water, which are near the surface. Compacted soil, shallow watering and heavy clay all push growth upward, and as those roots thicken they lift out of the lawn. Maples, poplars, willows and older ash trees do it most often in Cache Valley yards.
Can you grind roots without killing the tree?
Often, within limits. Shaving the exposed crown of a root is far less damaging than cutting it through, and keeping work away from the trunk flare matters most. We look at how many roots are involved and how close they are before agreeing to grind, and we say so when the request is too risky for the tree.
Can you grind roots close to my sidewalk?
Yes, carefully. We work the root down to turf level and stop short of the concrete edge so the wheel never contacts it. Where a root has already lifted a slab, grinding the wood does not lower the concrete — that is a concrete repair, and we will tell you rather than sell you grinding that will not fix it.
