Stump removal questions
Is grinding the same as stump removal?
For nearly every yard, yes. Grinding removes the stump and the flare below the surface so nothing shows and nothing regrows from it. Digging a root ball out with machinery removes more wood but tears up a much larger area of lawn and usually costs more to repair.
Can you remove several stumps at once?
Yes, and it is usually the cheaper way to do it. Setup and travel get spread across the whole job, so a row of stumps from one tree removal costs less per stump than calling us back three separate times.
Can I replant where a stump was removed?
You can, with the right backfill. Wood chips break down slowly and pull nitrogen out of the soil, so for a new tree or shrub we haul the grindings off and fill the hole with topsoil instead.
What if the stump is old and rotten?
Soft, punky stumps grind quickly, but they often hide dirt and rock pulled into the decay, which is harder on the teeth than clean wood. It is still a routine job — just worth mentioning when you call so we plan for it.
